The women that we are
‘The Women We Are’ was created as a way to explore my relationship with femininity. When I started the journey of self acceptance I realised how much hatred towards my body came from how feminine it looked. Innate femininity made me feel weak and objectified. I was frustrated with how powerless it made me feel. It resulted in overall hopelessness for existing within the world as a woman. One of the important turning points in this journey was my grandma's death. She was the perfect depiction of what I imagine a "powerful woman" to be. Divine, thoughtful and strong. After she passed away, she became a symbol of femininity for me and gave me the courage to start loving those parts of myself.
While creating, I’m very conscious of the inclusivity of my work. I think the beauty of femininity is that we all can find it within ourselves and give it space to exist. When I think of the core traits that make the feminine, I think of vulnerability, emotions, pain, tears, the comfort and rhythm of nature that, as humans, we’re so intertwined with. Those feelings go far beyond structures of sexuality or gender. There is something very fascinating in the multifacetedness of femininity and its abstraction while remaining specific and unique to every person, which I hope to uncover within my art.
